Weapons 2: Ninja June 11-June 15, 2012
Last year, our weapons camp focused on traditional “Good Guy” samurai weapons: the long sword and bo staff. This summer we’re going to learn about the Samurai’s counterparts, the ninja. They were not necessarily bad, just secretive. We’ll learn some of their secret fighting techniques, as well as how to use two of their most typical weapons: the ninjato (ninja sword) and shuriken (throwing star). Ages 6-14. All drills are done with safe practice weapons. All participants receive two practice weapons (padded ninjato and plastic shuriken) that are those to take home at the end of camp.
Far East Movement: Art, Asana, Attack! June 18-June 22& August 20-24, 2012
This is a great camp for everyone. Kids learn and practice many eastern movement practices (Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Qi Gong and various Yoga techniques). Aside from being fun and empowering, this “sampler approach” helps kids discover new practices that interest them, and/or practices that strengthen and support their existing training. Each day, in addition to physical movement, we learn about and practice a different “fine art” from the East. Examples include calligraphy, origami, mandala making or creating zen gardens. Ages 6-14. No prior martial arts or yoga experience is necessary. All participants receive a yoga mat to take home at the end of camp.
Special 3-5 Year Old Camp July 2-July 27, 2012
This is a developmentally appropriate version of our signature camp: Far East Movement. Every day kids take a Tae Kwon Do class, a yoga class and engage in a different art project from the east (dragon making, mandala coloring, etc.). Instead of nap time, we lead the kids through a guided, child-friendly meditation. Ages 6-14. No prior martial arts or yoga experience is necessary. All participants receive a Tae Kwon Do uniform and a yoga mat to take home at the end of camp.
Forms Unleashed August 27-August 31, 2012
This camp starts by reviewing forms that may have been forgotten while kids were away for the summer. Then it gets interesting . . . we learn why we do forms and discover secret fighting techniques embedded in the forms. We also create and name our own forms. For those that go to tournaments, this is the perfect camp to do if you want to create a form for a creative forms competition. Ages 6-14, all belt levels.
