About the Do Jang (Tae Kwon Do School): School Rules
Martial Arts teach us many things and respect is one of the most important. These rules are all about respecting yourself, your fellow students, your Dojang and those in the broader world. They are also about health and safety, so it is absolutely necessary that they are followed not just by students but also by their guests and/or caregivers.
Rules for students, guests and caregivers:
1) No shoes are allowed past the red line.
2) All cell phones, pages, etc. must be kept on vibrate.
3) Once you cross the red line, you must remain silent while class is being conducted- and absolutely no talking on cell phones.
4) Caregivers and guests are not allowed to speak to either the Instructor, or the students, while class is being conducted.
5) Only students and the Instructor are allowed on the training floor during class.
6) No chewing gum is allowed for anyone under the age of 18.
7) Please keep the Dojang clean.
8) Small children, although welcome, must remain quiet enough not to disrupt classes.
9) Absolutely no pets are allowed.
Rules for students only:
1) Students must bow to the flags upon entering the training floor.
2) Students must bow to all Black Belts upon meeting them.
3) Students must address all Black Belts as “Sir” or “Ma’am”
4) There are no shoes on the training floor.
5) Students must wear a clean East Side Tae Kwon Do uniform to class. In the summer they may wear an East Side Tae Kwon Do T-shirt with their uniform pants. This is the only outfit admissible to wear to class.
6) No jewelry while training except wedding rings and stud earrings. No jewelry whatsoever during sparring or self-defense classes.
7) No gum chewing in class.
8) No food or drink is allowed on the training floor.
9) If you are late to class, stand at the edge of the mat and wait for the Instructor to bow you in.
Testing
Students of Tae Kwon Do demonstrate their progress in the Art by the color of the belt they wear. Each colored belt is a step toward the goal of achieving a black belt.
East Side Tae Kwon Do holds promotion tests once a month. We will alternate between testing at East and West side locations. Tests usually occur on the third Saturday of every month at 3pm. However, this is subject to change, so please check the test postings. Please note that testing can take as long as 2 1/2 hours.
Testing Etiquette
Traditionally, in martial arts the instructor will approach a student when he/she feels the student is ready to be tested. As progress is an integral part of Tae Kwon Do training, the student should always feel free to discuss his status with the instructor.
Sparring
All sparring must be supervised by a Black Belt. Students who attend sparring classes should wear a full set of sparring gear including head, rib, shin, foot, arm and hand padding, as well as a protective mouthpiece. Men should wear a protective cup.
No head shots are allowed in our sparring classes unless it is between two black belts. Anyone who does not abide by these rules will be given a warning, and if there is further noncompliance, the student will be suspended from sparring.
